The 5 S's

The 5 S's

The 5 S’s are a method for soothing crying babies, developed by pediatrician Dr. Harvey Karp. The 5 S’s mimic the environment of their mother’s womb making babies feel very calm and safe.

The calming reflex only works when it’s triggered the right way so using these techniques helps to accomplish that.

Swaddling: Wrap your baby in a blanket swaddle-style or place them in a premade swaddle blanket.

Side-lying: Place your baby on their side while you supervise them or hold them in a side football hold.

Shushing: Shush your baby (start loud until they begin to quiet down then you can quiet down your shushing). Or turn on white noise.

Swinging: Gently swing your baby back and forth.

Sucking: Offer your baby a pacifier, bottle, or nipple. Sucking can lower their heart rate, blood pressure, and stress levels.
